The Meeting Place

In our part of the city (Changchun) there is a corner where everyone meets because everyone knows it’s location - Mai Dan Lo Hen Ge Leng. Loosley transliterated it is the McDonalds by the supermarket. As seen in the following video clip, this is a busy corner where there always seems to be a lot happening. While waiting to meet friends it is fun just to watch all the activity.

Perplexed by Facebook

Living far from home (in China), we are always looking for new ways of connecting with folks back home.  So, I decided to give Facebook a try and the verdict is still out. It is  definitely fun, but I am not quite sure I totally get the appeal. I am sure many people say this about blogging; however, as anyone who follows this blog can attest, I am an infrequent/inconsistent blogger. Frankly, I like blogging because I find it to be an occasional creative outlet of sorts; however, I usually only post every couple of weeks or so. Facebook on the other hand is addictive!

Upon giving Facebook a try I was amazed at the level of interaction and the speed with which you can connect with others. Interaction on Facebook is nearly instantaneous and it snowballs. As you get in touch with more people, the more you find yourself searching for “friends” or mutual acquaintances of friends.  I got in touch with people I haven’t been in contact with for years and found myself endlessly fussing with my profile and viewing the profiles of others. I guess we all want community in some form and that must be the appeal of social networking applications like Facebook. The thing that has me perplexed is the nature of the communication on Facebook…it seems like Facebook is conducive for quick chat-like communication not conversation/dialogue. For example, there are gadgets in Facebook where you “update” your friends about what you are doing now or post a blurb on their “wall”.

So, I guess I kind of like using Facebook, but wonder if says anything about how we have grown accustomed to communicating. Maybe I just need to lighten up…  Do you use Facebook? How do you use it?  If you do, write on my wall or give me a poke (still not sure what that is). ( in facebook under Mike last name)
